Including Toddler Siblings in Your Baby’s Photo Session: Tips and Tricks for a Memorable Shoot

Capturing the early days of your newborn is a priceless experience, and incorporating their older toddler siblings into the session can add an extra layer of love and connection to these treasured memories. As a Sydney-based newborn and baby photographer, I’ve had the joy of photographing many families in the Inner West and beyond, helping them to celebrate the beauty of growing families. Here are some insights and tips on how to include toddler siblings in your baby's photo session for heartwarming results.

Prepare the Stage

1. Timing is Everything: Toddlers have limited attention spans and operate best under routines. Schedule your session around your toddler’s happiest times, typically in the morning or after a nap. This ensures they are at their best, both emotionally and physically.

2. Practice at Home: Before the session, spend a little time with your toddler and a doll, practicing how to hold and interact with a baby. This not only helps your toddler feel more comfortable during the shoot but can also reduce any anxiety they might feel about interacting with their new sibling.

3. Familiarity Helps: Bring along your toddler’s favorite toy or blanket. This can help make the photography studio feel more familiar and comforting, easing them into the session.

During the Session

1. Start with the Toddler: Give the toddler all your attention initially. This helps them feel important and cherished, not just the older sibling. I always aim to take photos of just the sibling first before introducing the baby into the shots to help your older child warm up to me.

2. Use Simple Instructions: Toddlers respond best to simple, gentle instructions. Use playful directives like, “Can you show your baby brother how soft this blanket is?” or “Let’s see who can make the baby smile!” This keeps the session fun and engaging for them.

3. Keep the Atmosphere Light and Fun: Keeping the mood upbeat and relaxed is crucial. Toddlers can quickly pick up on stress or anxiety, which might make them uneasy. If you're relaxed, they're more likely to be relaxed too.

4. Include Parental Support: Having a parent close by can be comforting for both the baby and the toddler. Parents can quickly step in to adjust poses, soothe, or entertain as needed, which helps the session run smoothly.

Capturing the Connection

1. Focus on Interaction: Rather than aiming for perfect poses, I focus on capturing the natural interactions between siblings. Whether it’s a gentle kiss on the forehead or a giggle shared over a stuffed animal, these genuine moments often make for the most precious photographs.

2. Let the Toddler Take the Lead: Sometimes, allowing the toddler to choose how they want to interact with their sibling can lead to beautiful, unexpected moments. This could be them showing the baby a picture book or gently tucking a blanket around them.

3. Be Quick: With toddlers, time is of the essence. I'm always ready to capture those fleeting moments quickly. Sometimes the spontaneous reactions are the most memorable ones.
